The Most Unorthodox Patreon Page In Cyberspace
Hello Friend.
Some people ask me, “what’s the best way to support your work at the What If Project? Do you have Patreon?”
I do.
And.
Look.
I’m gonna be real with you (really real, OK?) - you’re not gonna “get” much from my Patreon - freebies, extras, bonus content, etc. I’ve had an option for Patreon support for the last 5 years and have done everything imagineable with it. At first I had different tiers with different rewards …
Bonus blog posts.
Bonus podcast episodes.
Inside looks at upcoming book excerpts.
A book club where I mailed you one of my favorite books every quarter.
Discord communities.
A Marco Polo club.
… All the things.
BUT.
Then one day one of my Patreon friends who has been with me since day 1 said, “I see what you’re doing and I applaud you, but most people aren’t supporting you to get something - they’re supporting you because of what they’re already getting from you. I don’t have time for more podcasts, more blog posts, more books - I can’t keep up with the content as it is. I’m just giving because I believe in what you’re doing. I don’t give to a church anymore and so I give to you instead because you’re helping me in my spiritual journey.”
Honestly? That was a huge relief. The work I put into the What If Project is more than I put into any of my other jobs/gigs/etc. and it makes the least amount of money - BUT it gives me the most joy, and so I keep going. Between the podcast episodes, the prep for those episodes, the blog posts, the editing, the social media things, the books, the YouTube channel, the art I’m now doing … sometimes I spend as much as 30 hours a week and I don’t really have the mental space to create even more content for this space.
The reality is that I’m not trying to impress anyone and I’m not trying to “gain a following” or make money or be a household name. I posted on Facebook today that I’m in the era of my life where I’m choosing INNER PEACE over POPULARITY. I really don’t care about algorithms and followers and seeing my name and podcast in bright lights. I used to, I used to track all the numbers. I check in on them, sure, and celebrate milesones (like 300 episodes or 400,000 downloads) but they no longer direct my decisions in terms of content, Patreon tiers, etc.
I am who I am. I do what I do. I make what I make. And I hope it helps someone feel a spark of life inside.
And so, yeah - what you see is what you get. Lots of people ask how they can support the project and this is the best way - pick a tier, give monthly … it all goes towards the bills. I literally used Patreon money last week to buy groceries and pay the electric bill. It helps put food on the table and (literally!) keep the lights on.
So, that said - welcome to the most Unorthodox Patreon Page on the Internet, HA! I’m glad you’re here and grateful for your support.
Much love.
