Remember

The other night I was staring at a blank canvas with blue paint on my paint brush thinking about the dreams I used to have as a kid.

Did you have dreams?

I did. Like …

The dream of being a baseball player (but being told it was unrealistic).

The dream of being a veterinarian (but being told I didn’t have what it took because I was ‘too emotional’).

The dream of being an artist (but being told my art wasn’t good enough).

Sigh.

This is what I ended up making, it’s called “Remember” – may we look deep into the eyes of the characters who used to bring us joy as children (Charlie Brown, Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Winnie the Pooh, _____) and may we sit with that joy on the dock of our lives and look out into the vastness of the universe and remember the dreams we used to have as children – the huge dreams that seemed reachable and full of life and excitement and adventure and possibility, the ones we swore to our little selves that we’d spend our lives pursuing with all of our might.

Yes.

May we remember them and honor them and dare to reach for them even if they have evolved and changed into something different now that we’re adults.

After all …

Who told little us that we weren’t enough?

Who told little us that we didn’t have what it took?

Who told little us that our dream was unrealistic?

Who crushed little us’s dream?

they were wrong, and you and I know that now.

SO – may we call little us out of the closet of our hearts that we hid them in after their dreams were crushed and invite them to bring out the big box of dreams they’ve kept safe for us all these years so that grown up us can REMEMBER them and pursue them and dream of them once again.

Much love.
