What Will You Create Today?

In his book “Original Blessing” Matthew Fox makes an interesting observation. He points out that in a woman’s lifetime she will produce somewhere between 300-400 eggs while in a man’s lifetime he will produce around 400 billion sperm and so, he wonders, “how much more fertile is one human imagination?”

Right?

Think about that. If the human body is capable of producing that many eggs and that many sperm over the course of a typical lifetime, how many images does one human brain produce in a lifetime? How many ideas does that mind produce over the course of 60, 70, 80, 90 years?

And how capable is that brain of coming up with ways to carry out those ideas and make them into a reality?

This struck me in my reading this morning very simply because we’re all wired to create. Meister Eckhart once said that “the seed of God is in us. The seed of a pear tree grows into a pear tree. The seed of a hazel tree grows into a hazel tree. The seed of God grows into God.”

God is a God of creation, right? The Hebrew word for “word” is “dabhar” while the Greek word is “logos” and both words have to do with the Divine energy of creation that is breathed or wired into all things … including you and me.

You and I are reflections of God.

You and I are the results of dabhar.

You and I are the results of logos.

You and I are the result of the breath of God breathing out a Divine word that created a fireball that eventually evolved into all things.

And so as people who are created in the image of the Divine, we have the seed of the Divine in us and since all seeds grow into the thing they came from, we are all growing into the creative Spirit from which we all came, which means that we ought to be becoming …

More.

And more.

And more.

And more.

… Creative each and every day.

Now.

Before you tell me that’s too New Age-y and not enough Christian-y, I’ll remind you of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians, “and we, with our unveiled faces reflecting like mirrors the glory of the Lord, all grow brighter and brighter as we are turned into the image that we reflect: this is the work of the Lord who is Spirit.”

Indeed, we are all becoming more and more like and are being turned more and more into the image of the God whom we reflect, the image of the God who is planted inside of us all.

And so today as you go about reflecting that image in your workplace, in your family, with your friends … what will you create?

God is a creator.

God’s image is in you.

Your body creates things like eggs.

It creates things like sperm.

It creates ideas.

It creates thoughts.

… What will you allow your mind to create today? And will you allow your body to follow suit and be the hands and feet of your mind to put that idea together, to make it a reality?

Oh.

And remember, you have the power to create Divinely OR Demonically.

Right?

Because although your mind is capable of creating something has complex as a symphony that brings tears to the human eye, it’s also capable of creating a nuclear weapon that can put the human race on the brink of extinction.

Yes - the creative powers of the Divine are within you. You have been entrusted with a great power and so may you use that power to merge with your passions and your hobbies and the things that bring you life and may you create something that makes the world around you a better place.

Maybe it’s a podcast.

Maybe it’s a drawing.

Maybe it’s a painting.

Maybe it’s a rally to bring people together to brainstorm about the environment.

Maybe it’s a Bible study.

Maybe it’s a book.

Maybe it’s a blog.

Maybe it’s being an activist for LGBTQ people.

Maybe it’s looking for ways to do church differently.

Who knows what image your mind will conjure up today. Maybe it’ll be small, maybe it’ll be big. Maybe it’ll impact 1 person at your workplace or hundreds of people in your community. Whatever it is, though, may you take the idea or the image and create something wonderful with it.

Much love,
